Management of Harvested Wildlife Populations
نویسنده
چکیده
Humans have been harvesting wild populations for the entire extent of human history. In most early human societies, a successful hunt not only fed one’s family, but also brought respect from both family and community (Bolen and Robinson 2002). Although most North Americas and western Europeans today acquire their food that was planted, harvested, and processed by someone else, hunting and harvesting of wild populations will undoubtedly continue. Harvesting wild populations is often controversial, but the ethics of harvesting wild populations is not our primary purpose here. Rather, our objectives are to 1) discuss the reasons for harvesting wild populations, 2) evaluate a variety of common strategies for harvesting, 3) discuss the theoretical foundations for maximum sustainable yield and ageand sex-biased harvests, and 4) understand the effects of harvesting on target and non-target wildlife.

Resource management cycles and the sustainability of harvested wildlife populations.
Constant harvest policies for fish and wildlife populations can lead to population collapse in the face of stochastic variation in population growth rates. Here, we show that weak compensatory response by resource users or managers to changing levels of resource abundance can readily induce harvest cycles that accentuate the risk of catastrophic population collapse. Dynamic system models incorp...
متن کاملMolecular ecological approaches to studying the evolutionary impact of selective harvesting in wildlife.
Harvesting of wildlife populations by humans is usually targeted by sex, age or phenotypic criteria, and is therefore selective. Selective harvesting has the potential to elicit a genetic response from the target populations in several ways. First, selective harvesting may affect population demographic structure (age structure, sex ratio), which in turn may have consequences for effective popul...
متن کاملCan Local Ecological Knowledge Contribute to Wildlife Management? Case Studies of Migratory Birds
Sound management of wildlife species, particularly those that are harvested, requires extensive information on their natural history and demography. For many global wildlife populations, however, insufficient scientific information exists, and alternative data sources may need to be considered in management decisions. In some circumstances, local ecological knowledge (LEK) can serve as a useful...
متن کاملEvaluation of Gazella subgutturosa Habitat and Presentation of its Utility Model at Mouteh Wildlife Refuge
Introduction: effective management and protection of wildlife populations depends on human understanding of the relationship between wildlife populations and habitats. The destruction and fragmentation of habitats reduces the living area of local communities, limits them to small habitats, and isolates wildlife populations, leading to increased intra-reproductions, reduced genetic diversity, an...
متن کاملManagement of a transboundary wildlife population: A self-enforcing cooperative agreement with renegotiation and variable transfer payments
This paper characterizes a dynamic contract that allows renegotiation and variable transfer payments (VTP) between owners of two independently-harvested, ecologically-dependent mammal populations. The decision environment is modeled as a two-person differential game. We develop a recursive-efficiency criterion that forms the basis for determining the size of the VTP, which makes the bargaining ...
